I can remember watching classic variety shows like Hee-Haw and The Lawrence Welk show when I was a kid. They have tried several times in the past to bring the variety show back, but have had no such luck. It's just hard to match up to a classic. Especially now that Big Band, jazz music and old country classics just can't compete with what the kiddies like to listen to now. R&B, hip hop, club and grunge music is not really a family friendly genre.
But my kids love the Lawrence Welk show. The skits and singing and dancing can keep them entertained the entire hour.
Sometimes I'm thankful for our limited cable. It allows us to slow down and enjoy some programs that normally we might just flip on by.
